National Federation of Independent Unions

A Proud History

The National Federation of Independent Unions (NFIU) is the only nationally-recognized voice of independent unionism in the united States through which individual, independent unions can come together for a common purpose — protecting the rights of America's working families, both on and off the job:
  • The right to all the benefits of independence, including total autonomy, local treasury control, and much more;
  • The right to decent wages;
  • The right to dependable benefits;
  • The right to safe and respectable working conditions; and,
  • The right to address grievances and seek justice through collective bargaining.
NFIU is not new. During World War II, the first group of independent unions joined each other to form the Confederate Unions of America. Later, a splinter group became the National Independent Union Council and, in 1963, the two organizations merged into the present National Federation of Independent Unions.

NFIU has the base through which independent unions achieve strength and recognition. We work to promote and advance the interests and welfare of unions and the workers they represent. Our recent affiliation with the 750,000-member Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), AFL-CIO, provides NFIU members all the rights, benefits and privledges of AFL-CIO membership and its Union Priviledge Program.
