NFIU Affiliation
The Benefits of NFIU's Affiliation with LIUNA
NFIU has kept pace with the times. Labor now faces the challenges of a changing marketplace — economic globalization, corporate downsizing, mergers and buy-outs, and a growing anti-labor business environment. Tailored to meet the needs of workers, NFIU is now able to provide the continuation of local, hands-on autonomy with the strength and backing of the 750,000-member LIUNA, AFL-CIO. NFIU offers its affiliates' members independence and the benefits of an international union. Our affiliation with LIUNA and the AFL-CIO provides:
  • Coordinated and Collective bargaining
  • Organizing and Corporate Campaigns
  • Research assistance
  • Access to LIUNA's Legal and Public Affairs Departments
  • Training Programs
  • Membership in the AFL-CIO Union Privilege Program
  • Protection against raids by other AFL-CIO unions
  • The services of LIUNA staff representatives and numerous individual member services
Democracy in Action
The NFIU Division of LIUNA charters its own locals, conducts business — as it always has done — as the voice of independent-minded local unions, and carries out its internal operations under its own constitution. No one can sign contracts on behalf of NFIU members! The NFIU Division attends LIUNA General Executive Board meetings, and will receive delegate votes at conventions in direct proportion to its membership.

NFIU hold National Conventions to elect officers and formulate the policies that drive our Federation. Each affiliated union, regardless of size, is entitled to a voting delegate. NFIU National Conventions provide forums for the free exchange of ideas, information and contacts among union officers from throughout the nation — and does so in an atmosphere which promotes unity and cooperation.

NFIU holds Legislative Conferences in Washington DC, to enable affiliates to advance issues of importance in our nations capitol. By meeting with legislators and members of government agencies, NFIU ensures that the views and concerns of it's members are made known to and acted upon their representatives.
